Privatization of power plants is not the issue. Rivers State built the 30MW Kolo Creek Gas turbine plant in the early 1980s. The power could only be distributed to areas where the national grid did not serve. When Alamieyeseigha became Governor, he rehabilitated that plant and for almost 7 years thereafter, that was the only source of power till the national grid was connected in 2007 or so.
Recently in Rivers State, 3 major power plants were built at Omoku, Eleme and Transa Amadi with combined capacity of over 200Mw. The State faced the same challenge and power produced and sent into the national grid was often not paid for, for years. In frustration, the Amaechi administration sold all the power stations and we are back to square one.
The solution is for the federal government to stop strangulating the nation by trying to be in charge of everything. This new way started with the military in 1967 and it is getting absurd and out of hand.
Electricity business should not be on the exclusive list. State governents should be allowed to provide power by any means for their people. That will be a more permanent solution.
Let the federal government be bothered with fewer responsibilities so that they can focus and deliver.
