Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike has made a dramatic U-turn regarding his support for the Peoples Democratic Party’s presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar. He now claims to be fully in support of Atiku’s presidential aspirations but insists that the party’s National Chairman, Iyorchia Ayu, must resign.
Rent-seekers, according to the governor, have thwarted attempts to end the crisis that has rocked the party since May.
The new twist was revealed when he welcomed Cross River State PDP candidates for governor, senator, house of representatives, house of assembly, and other positions on Wednesday night at his private villa in Rumueprikom.
The governor supported Sandy Onor, a longtime political ally, and the other candidates running in Cross River State by donating dozens of buses to their campaigns.
The governor’s special assistant on media, Kelvin Ebiri, highlighted in a statement on Thursday that Wike reiterated his position to remain in the PDP, as he had previously vowed on numerous occasions.
Wike stated that “This is the era that the power game is being played” while urging that Ayu must go and that the South must assume leadership of the PDP. Forget it if you don’t have it right away. You are a fool if you believe anyone who says that (Iyorchia) Ayu should quit after the election has been held.
Nobody wants to be truthful. You will ask why he is doing this if I suggest removing the vice presidential candidate and the presidential candidate.
Wike continued, “He (national chairman) indicated he would retire if the presidential candidate came from the north, therefore he has had this in mind. Now that the situation has materialized, you should not resign. And they are advising you to speak with Wike.
“What’s the issue again? I’ve accepted the vice presidential candidate and the presidential candidate. Your contribution is made. All I’m saying is, let the South have something.
The governor remarked, “You cannot have a presidential candidate, national chairman, and director general of the campaign.”
