Lagos State Police Command has confirmed the allegation by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) that political thugs attacked its chieftains and others in Ajah area of the state.
The state’s Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Benjamin Hundeyin, who confirmed the incident, yesterday, said that investigations had commenced, promising to make the outcome available to the media.
The PDP had accused the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos State of sponsoring thugs to attack opposition parties and cause mayhem in parts of the state.
This followed a reported attack on a PDP chieftain in Eti-Osa Local Council, Olaniyi Akinyemi, on Tuesday evening, by political thugs at the Ikota Shopping Complex.
A witness, said the attackers blocked Akinyemi, shattered his car’s windscreens, dragged him out and pounced on him.
Chairman of Lagos PDP, Phillip Aivoji, decried frequent attacks on members of the party and called on security agencies to do more to protect members of the opposition.
He said: “We are in the period where political parties sponsor thugs to attack, intimidate and even murder political opponents. The police should do more to protect members of the opposition parties.
“Politics should not be this bitter. We are being systematically targeted and intimidated into submission, and we will not give up. We are ready to take over and free Lagos from over two decades of misrule by the APC. The people are wiser now, and are so ready to kick the APC out of Lagos for good.”
The Guardian gathered that the thugs that carried out the attack were shouting APC while using dangerous weapons on victims.
Lagos PDP Publicity Secretary, Hakeem Amode, urged the Lagos Commissioner of Police, Abiodun Alabi, and the Area Commander of Police in Eti-Osa to do everything possible to fish out those behind the attack.
He confirmed the attack in a statement, saying several members of the party and journalists sustained injuries. One of the journalists, he stated, is in critical condition in an undisclosed hospital.
