Criminals burn police station in Anambra community..release inmates

There is currently unease, tension, and uncertainty in Ihiala community of Ihiala local government area of Anambra State, as unknown hoodlums set the divisional police headquarters in the area on fire.

Domotech regional reporter in Anambra, Mokwugwo Solomon, reported that the incident occurred in the early hours of Wednesday, December 28, 2022; when gunmen, in their numbers, reportedly stormed the Divisional headquarters, shoot sporadically, and scared police officers on duty, before setting the building on fire.

The motive behind the development could not be known at the time of filing this report.

It was not also clear whether the hoodlums went away with police ammunition; but it was gathered that the inferno destroyed the building, property, and official documents worth several millions of naira.

The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) at Anambra State Command, Mr Tochukwu Ikenga, neither took his call nor responded to the text message sent to his line concerning the development.

Meanwhile, a former President General of Ihiala Progress Union (IPU), Chief Okey Chukwu, confirmed the development to Sun News.

The Police in Onitsha, Anambra State said its operatives repelled an attack by some gunmen on the Ihiala police division and recovered an abandoned AK-47 rifle.

DSP Tochukwu Ikenga, Police Public Relations Officer, Anambra command, confirmed the attack to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday.

Ikenga said “Our operatives in the early hours of today engaged some gunmen who attacked Ihiala police division and recovered one abandoned AK-47 rifle.

“The gunmen escaped the scene due to the superior fire of the police operatives although no casualty was recorded.

“Unfortunately, the explosives the gunmen threw inside the police station had already ignited fire that affected the building.”

Ikenga assured that security operation was still ongoing in the area, promising that further details would be communicated to the public.

Gunmen have bombed the Ihiala Police Divisional Headquarters in Ihiala Local Government Area of Anambra State, south-east Nigeria.

The attack happened on Wednesday at about 3:00 a.m., residents told PREMIUM TIMES.

The gunmen were said to have thrown improvised explosive devices into the facility, which razed a building inside the station.

An indigene of the area, Uju Okafor, said the bombing and sporadic shootings by the gunmen did not allow them to sleep during the attack.

“I was very scared when I started hearing of the heavy shootings and bomb explosions,” she said.

Mr Okafor said it was later in the morning that they realised that the attack was carried out at the police facility.

Chinonso Okoye, another indigene of the area, told PREMIUM TIMES that the gunmen set some inmates free during the attack.

“It was very early this morning that the gunmen started shooting and throwing bombs. We heard they released some people in the police cell,” he said.
