The Killer Cop

This pregnant woman, a barrister and a member of lagos state chapter of Nigeria bar association was reportedly shot dead on 25th December by a police officer called ASP Aliyu of Ajiwe Police station Ajah Lagos, while she and her husband were coming back from chrismass service. She was shot in the presence of her young daughter and husband. It was also reported that she’s been struggling to take in for past 8 years until her hope recently come to fruition. Her name is Bar Bolanle Raheem.

My neighbor nearly suffer similar fate in front of police area command in Imo state while coming back from their village to owerri. The husband like in the case of Raheem was the one driving with their young daughter in the car too. A police officer shot at their vehicle from a very close range, over nothing. God so kind, the bullet moved from the point it was fired to the other side, without killing any of them. The officer arrested them and impound their vehicle. After much pleading the officer finally let them go after insisting and collecting money for the bullet he wasted. They were only carrying vegetable and other edible in car and did nothing that warranted the treatment they got. But that is naija.

Trigger hungry force men, helped to birth the anger on which insecurity is breed and sustained. End sars was not bloody until trigger hungry officers drew the first blood. Shooting protesters is a crime that ought to be punished. Our politicians refuse to address this because they prefer their personal security to the security of the entire nation.

The death of Barr Raheem reminds us again that their is need to fight insecurity from two fronts. One is fighting it through the retraining of officers especially the bloody ones, the greedy ones, the overzealous ones and the trigger hungry ones. There’s need to sack drug and crime culprits from the security systems and keep them under check too. There is need to place more value on the life of the people. Secondly by arming reasonable officers with all necessary modern gadgets to sanely catch and deal with non state crime actors in accordance to the norms of prevalent laws.
