I spent the last Yuletide holiday in my native Ojoto. And the kidnappers came calling, but my ever reliable and compassionate God made it impossible for them to perform their enterprise!

Saturday, December 31, 2022:

My Baby and I attended a social function in Ojoto. We were billed to attend another function in nearby Nnokwa, one of the towns in Idemili South LGA (of Anambra State) which has Ojoto as its headquarters.

When we got ready to leave the Ojoto event, I told My Baby that we should go to Nnokwa right away. She looked at me with disproving eyes and retorted, “I will not go outside Ojoto. Are you not aware of the prevailing spate of kidnappings? Let’s go home please!”

I hesitated. She knows me inside out and could tell the meaning of that. Then she said to me, “Take me home if you insist on going to Nnokwa because I will not go with you. I can also find my way home if you please.”

I drove My Baby home, and as I was about leaving for Nnokwa alone, my spirit told me to drop the SUV we just got back in and go in a small car – and I obeyed. That change of vehicle was what the Lord used to save me from the kidnappers who were waiting for me in front of my house as I drove back at about 5:30 PM.

Their car was parked at the end of my uncle’s fence, the compound just next to mine. I had called my house on phone as I got close to open the gate for me as I normally do. Two very unfamiliar young men blocked me right in front of my compound, with one pulling a short gun on me.

And right then, the Lord put confusion in their midst! One said I was not the man and the other said I was. The other guy insisted I was not the man and his mate shouted at him, “He’s the man, look at him closely!” To that the first guy said, “But this is not the car he should come in!”

At that point, the gate was opened for me and I rushed into my compound in a split second. The Lord made them not come after me and the gate was quickly locked. Of course, no one left the compound again till the following morning.

Monday, January 2, 2023:

My first cousin, a lady, visited. Their house is some meters away on the same road. She left at about 8:00 PM, and the pedestrian gate was locked behind her.

About 15 minutes after the lady left my house, she called me on phone hurriedly asking where I was. I answered rather disdainfully, “But you have just left my house! Of course, I am at home!” To that, she replied, “Thank God!”

I asked her if anything was the matter and she retorted, “Ensure that nobody opens your gate again tonight no matter who knocks!”

I asked why, and she said, “There is danger in front of your house!”

I asked her what she meant. She said that as she left my house a while earlier, she noticed a car parked between my compound and the adjacent village hall on the right. The car started immediately she descended from my culvert and chased after her, not caring about the roughness of the very bumpy road. She gained advantage because of the poor state of the road. She said she suspected they were the kidnappers and that they apparently thought she was My Baby. When the occupants of the car saw that she had escaped, they reversed and drove back to their original position.

Wednesday, January 4, 2023:

My Baby and I had started feeling unusually uncomfortable and, therefore, resolved on January 3 to return to Lagos the following day. We informed my aged mum about our decision.

As early as 5:00 AM, we came down, ready to set out on our journey by road. My mum had already come out of her house and was waiting. Immediately I came out of my house, she asked me where I was going. Confused, I reminded her that I had told her the previous night that we would leave for Lagos that morning. To my astonishment, she replied emphatically, “You are going nowhere until daybreak. Those kidnappers are back. They are in front of our compound.”

I asked my mum how she knew. In a voice that betrayed so much sadness, she said, “I don’t sleep well again since this kidnap demons started hovering around our compound. I heard the sound of a car around 4:00 AM and came out of my house. I saw car lights coming from the direction of our village hall. The car stopped in front of our compound. The driver switched off the lights and turned off the engine. The car has not started since then. Those criminals are outside our gate.”

That again was how the Lord saved My Baby and me from being kidnapped that early morning. We eventually left just before 7:00 AM after we confirmed that the agents of darkness were no longer there.

I cannot appreciate God Almighty enough for His overwhelming love and compassion which He has consistently generously extended to my family. I request my friends to kindly join me and my family in thanksgiving to God for His unmerited love and mercy that abound in my life.
