The Lagos State government is set to demolish Jankara, Bombota and Pelewura markets in Lagos Island, where illegal construction of shops and stalls are aiding indiscriminate dumping of refuse and blocking drainages.
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, who disclosed this, yesterday, while inspecting the flooded areas of Jankara, Ojo Giwa, Oroyiyin, Idumagbo, Bombata and Pelewura markets, expressed his administration’s readiness to resolve drainage problems in the state.
While assuring that the markets would be completely redesigned, Sanwo-Olu, however, instructed the Ministry of Environment to serve notices on parties concerned, and begin demolition of illegal structures immediately.
“I am using this as a notice to all illegal squatters and people doing things at the Bombota, Pelewura and Jankara markets, to vacate immediately, as we will ground them and put-up new designs,” Sanwo-Olu said.
He, however, stated that adequate notice would be given before the demolition commences at Pelewura market.
The governor, who also visited the Ilubirin Pumping station in Lagos Island, commended the contractors for the work done, and expressed confidence that the project would be completed by the end of December.
He expressed optimism that the project, once completed, would permanently solve the issue of flooding in Lagos Island.
Sanwo-Olu, however, appealed for cooperation of Lagosians in ridding the state of indiscriminate dumping of refuse.
MEANWHILE, Lagos State Environment and Special Offences Enforcement Unit (Task Force) has dealt another blow on hoodlums, who attempted to rebuild shanties and makeshift structures on Fagba rail track.
The seven-hour operation was executed by the Chairman of the agency, Shola Jeleloye, who mobilised his men and swooped on the squatters.
Speaking on the exercise, Jejeloye said: “We served the squatters one-month notice before the major operation in August, but instead of heeding our warning, they tried to put up some resistance. What we have today is a child’s play compared to what we experienced the last time we came. This is our fourth visit and I am sure they have gotten the message by now that we are determined to clear the rail tracks.”
“The shanties deface the environment and reduce the values of properties. Landlords and residents are relieved and can be rest assured that they would henceforth live in peace now that the shanties have been cleared.”
Jejeloye also notified stakeholders in the abattoir area of a meeting with government officials to ensure a lasting solution to the challenges in the area.
Similarly, the Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, has said that there is no going back on its decision to enforce the law and reclaim the environment from all sorts of infractions dotting the landscape.
Wahab, who stated this in Lekki, while leading state officials, including the Special Adviser on Environment, Kunle Rotimi-Akodu, Permanent Secretaries and heads of agencies, around Dodan Barracks, Obalende, Lekki Phase 2 and Iru Kingdom, to inspect the drainages and environmental infractions, insisted that there is no going back on this.
He said: “Without caring whose ox will be gored, we discovered that some people in the Gedegede community in Lekki Phase 2, have built a canal path and narrowed the primary channel, which would result in flooding that may destroy peoples’ assets. There is no looking back on this. My concern is why are people being so reckless in the cause of trying to grab land and make money at other people’s expense?”
