Obi of Onitsha dissociates self from planned conferment of Ndigbo Mayor title

Obi of Onitsha, Igwe Nnaemeka Achebe, has distanced himself from an event in Lagos where a certain person is to be conferred the title of Mayor of Ndigbo.
In a statement on Thursday by the monarch’s chief of staff, Chief Osita Anionwu, titled “The planned event of conferment of Mayor of Ndigbo title,” Igwe Achebe said the organisers did not seek his consent before naming him as royal father of the day at the event scheduled for December 16, 2024.

The statement said, “It has come to the attention of His Majesty, Nnaemeka A. Achebe CFR, mni, Agbogidi, Obi of Onitsha, through social media news reports, flyers and jingles that his name is being associated as Royal Father of the Day with the conferment of the title of Mayor of Ndigbo scheduled for 16 December, 2024 at Eko Hotel & Suites, Victoria Island, Lagos.
“His Majesty was neither approached nor did he consent to be associated with the event in any manner. His Majesty does not understand the purpose of the event and would not want to be associated with it.”
