Yuletide: LG workers groan in Ebonyi over non-payment of salaries, pensions

Despite Governor Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru’s stern directives for the thirteen Local Government chairmen in Ebonyi State to pay salaries and pensions of local government workers or face resignation, none of the chairmen have complied with the order.
This has left local government staff members in the state of disappointment and uncertainty, with Christmas approaching and salaries still unpaid.
Recall that the Governor’s announcement had initially sparked hope among the grassroots workforce, with many believing that their longstanding grievances of unpaid salaries and pensions would finally be addressed. However, their hopes were quickly dashed as the chairmen failed to take any action, leading to a bleak Christmas for local government workers in the state.
Speaking on the condition of anonymity, one local government staff member expressed their disappointment at the lack of compliance from the chairmen.
“We were jubilating when the Governor made the pronouncement, hoping for a positive change in our situation. However, it is disheartening to realize that we will be celebrating Christmas without our salaries. This is unprecedented in the history of Ebonyi State,” they lamented.
The failure of the local government chairmen to adhere to the Governor’s directives has raised questions about their commitment to the welfare of the workforce. It has also highlighted the lack of transparency and accountability in the local government administration in Ebonyi State.
Efforts to reach out to the ALGON chairman, Barrister Chinedu Uburu for comments on their non-compliance with the Governor’s orders have been fruitless, and there has been no official statement from the Governor’s office addressing the issue.
Local government workers are now facing a bleak Christmas as they struggle to make ends meet without receiving their rightful dues. The non-payment of salaries and pensions has worsened their financial hardships and added to the challenges they are already facing.
It is crucial for the local government chairmen to take immediate action and prioritize the welfare of the workers. Failure to do so not only disregards the rights and dignity of the employees but also reflects poorly on the leadership and governance in the state.
As Christmas approaches, the plight of the local government workers in Ebonyi State remains unresolved, casting a shadow over the festive season for many.
