This talk of taxation would have been very beneficial to the society if truly the proceeds would be directed at the root causes of our problems in Nigeria. However, because of the distrust between the public and the government caused by the deceit and lies, regularly strewn by government into the society, is the reason why the Tax Bill is finding it difficult to penetrate into the hearts of majority Nigerians.
Also, questions arise that, the causes of the impoverishment of Nigeria are not too far fetched from the waste by government on expensive projects and nonprojects that cannot be traced to or seen anywhere. Since we can’t see developments arising from the various loans taken by government from the World Bank, China and other banks, why should the already overtaxed public be further taxed to their lives’ thread to pay back the loans that had been embezzled by politicians?
The other point is the suspicion that, the clause in the bill for taxes to be collected by private companies on behalf of the government may probably be exploited by the President to favour his own collection agency, Alpha Beta, and that, that may actually be the intention the of the probably well-meaning Tax bill.
Further, taxing the overtaxed people of Nigeria may further drag them into more poverty. If incomes, salaries and unemployment stagnate in one point, taxation will definitely lower the standard of living of taxpayers, especially if government do not spend on projects and programmes that will ease the burden if taxpayers or if the proceeds of taxation are embezzled as usual.
