The Federal Government has urged traditional rulers in the North-East to support efforts to curb the proliferation of small arms and light weapons in the region.
The North-East Zonal Coordinator of the National Centre for the Control of Small Arms and Light Weapons, Maj. Gen. Abubakar Adamu (retd.), made the call during a courtesy visit to the Shehu of Borno, Abubakar Ibn Umar Garbai Al-Amin El-Kanemi, on Sunday.
Speaking at the palace, Adamu explained that the visit was to build a partnership with North-East Zonal Centre of under the Office of the National Security Adviser.
He said the collaboration was crucial because of the key role traditional rulers play in shaping communities and influencing peacebuilding.
Adamu explained that the NCCSALW was established in 2021 as the institutional framework for regulating and controlling small arms and light weapons in Nigeria.
He warned that the proliferation of arms had fuelled insecurity across the country, including banditry, kidnapping, political thuggery, cultism and insurgency.
