The Umuaka Elders Council Forum has written an open letter to AIG Kanayo Uzuegbu of Zone 9 Police Headquarters, calling on him to caution the Imo State Commissioner of Police over what they describe as “rampant intimidation and excessive use of teargas” by officers of the Umuaka Division.

According to the elders, the disturbing trend began on 21st August during the end of the Owu season when youths returning from the Eke Ibele show were teargassed at Ime Afor. They allege that the act has continued, with a recent incident leaving one person fainted.

The forum noted that indiscriminate use of force has endangered the health of women, youths, and the elderly in Umuaka, with many suffering from high blood pressure as a result.

The elders urged AIG Uzuegbu to use his office to ensure police officers adopt more peaceful methods of maintaining order. They stressed that “silence is not golden at this period.”

OPEN LETTER TO AIG KANAYO UZUEGBU
From Umuaka Elders Council Forum

Attention:
AIG Kanayo Uzuegbu
Zone 9 Police Headquarters

Dear Sir,

On behalf of the Umuaka Elders Council Forum, we respectfully call on your reputable office to urgently intervene in the growing issue of police intimidation and excessive use of force in Umuaka.

In recent weeks, officers from the Umuaka Division of the Nigerian Police have been repeatedly using teargas against market women and youths, creating an atmosphere of fear and endangering the health of innocent residents. This concerning trend was first observed on 21st August, at the close of the Owu season, when a group of boys returning from the Eke Ibele show were teargassed around Ime Afor. Since then, similar incidents have continued, with the most recent case reportedly causing an individual to faint.

Such indiscriminate use of teargas not only undermines public trust in law enforcement but also threatens the wellbeing of our people. Many residents, particularly the elderly, are already suffering from heightened blood pressure and other health complications due to these repeated episodes.

We therefore urge you, sir, to call on the Commissioner of Police, Imo State, to caution his men in Umuaka Division and to direct them towards more humane and peaceful methods of maintaining order. The use of excessive force against your own people cannot be justified, and at this time, silence is not golden.

We appeal to your sense of duty, justice, and compassion to ensure that peace and safety are restored in Umuaka without further harm to its residents.

Respectfully,

Elder Dominic Okoro
