Benjamin Kalu, the Deputy Speaker of Nigeria’s House of Representatives, has hinted that Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), may soon be released from detention. Kanu has been in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS) since June 2021, facing charges of treason.
Speaking at a meeting with the South East Legislators Forum in Abuja, Kalu revealed that ongoing negotiations with key authorities are aimed at securing Kanu’s release. He expressed optimism that the outcome of these talks would be clear in the near future, saying, “I am advocating for Mazi Nnamdi Kanu’s release. It will happen soon. Please keep us in your prayers.”
Kalu also emphasized the need for unity among political leaders in the South East to promote regional development. He urged lawmakers to actively engage in the constitutional amendment process and expressed support for the South East Development Commission (SEDC).
Furthermore, Kalu called for solidarity with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, noting that the government is committed to the welfare of the Igbo people and all Nigerians.
He stressed the power of unity, stating, “Networking is more powerful than money. Unity is strength. We must end the sit-at-home orders that are harming our people and focus on growth and cooperation.”
Kalu urged the legislators to develop a unified agenda for the region, with a focus on improving security, agriculture, infrastructure, energy, and technology. He also hinted at plans for regional town hall meetings to address these critical issues.
Kingsley Ikoro, who led the delegation, praised Kalu’s leadership and acknowledged him as the political leader of the Southeast. “You are our leader in the current political landscape. We are here to show solidarity and pledge our support,” Ikoro said, representing lawmakers from Anambra, Abia, Enugu, Ebonyi, and Imo states.
