Dozens of figures from Guinean civil society and political parties are demanding the immediate release of an opponent arrested for “insulting” the leader of the transition, and are denouncing the government’s increasing abuses against critical voices.
The arrest last Thursday of this opponent, Aliou Bah, leader of the Liberal Democratic Movement (MoDel), is the latest in a long series in the context of the severe restrictions on freedoms imposed by the junta led by General Mamadi Doumbouya who overthrew civilian President Alpha Condé in 2021.
“The arbitrary arrest of Aliou Bah is part of the policy of systematic elimination of people opposed to the arbitrariness and excesses of the National Committee for Development Rally (CNRD) ,” 150 academics and journalists declared in a statement sent to AFP on Monday. “We want to say loud and clear our refusal of terror. We want to reiterate with force and conviction our indignation in the face of the continued brutality of the government ,” they continued.
