ECOWAS formalizes Mali’s withdrawal and initiates separation procedure. Finally Malians are free from the shackles:
The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has officially confirmed Mali’s withdrawal from the organization and has initiated separation procedures. The decision follows Mali’s formal notification of its intention to leave the sub-regional organization.
In a correspondence addressed to the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of Mali, Abdoulaye Diop, the President of the ECOWAS Commission, Dr. Omar Alieu Touray, informs that the Authority of Heads of State and Government, during its 66th session held in Abuja on December 15, 2024, took note of Mali’s decision to withdraw.
In accordance with Article 91 of the Revised ECOWAS Treaty, Mali will cease to be a member of the Community as of 29 January 2025. The Authority therefore instructed the President of the Commission to initiate separation formalities with Mali as of that date.
In order to successfully complete this separation, President Touray proposes a meeting of the technical teams of both parties to initiate the necessary discussions. The date of this meeting will be agreed upon later by consultation.
