Fulani Scholars Urge Ban on Hausa Vigilante Groups After Recent Elimination of Bandit Leaders
A controversial statement has been released by Sheikh Musa Asadus-Sunnah, also known as Arɗon Miyetti Allah of the Fulani-only organization. Speaking on behalf of Fulani scholars and elites, he publicly called for the urgent prohibition of Hausa vigilante groups operating across the North-West region of Nigeria.
According to Sheikh Musa, the presence and actions of these vigilante groups are no longer acceptable, especially after their recent success in eliminating several high-profile Fulani bandit leaders. Among those reportedly neutralized by the vigilantes are Kacalla Ɗan Bakollo, Kacalla Maidada, and Kacalla Maijikka — notorious figures known for their roles in orchestrating violent attacks and kidnappings in the region.
In his announcement, Sheikh Musa Asadus-Sunnah made a direct appeal to the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, the Chief of Defence Staff General Christopher Musa, Chief of Army Staff, as well as the Ministers of Defence, Bello Matawalle and Badaru Abubakar. He urged them to take immediate steps to disband all vigilante formations in Hausa communities.
Instead of community-led security efforts, the Fulani cleric proposed what he called a “reconciliation and reintegration approach,” similar to the amnesty and rehabilitation programs granted to Niger Delta militants in the past. He emphasized the need for the Nigerian government to consider setting up manufacturing industries for bandits as part of a broader plan to reintegrate them into society.
The statement has sparked outrage and confusion across several Hausa communities, especially in light of the heavy toll banditry has taken on the region over the years — including mass killings, abductions, and the displacement of thousands.
Security analysts and civil society groups are now questioning the motives behind the call and are demanding clarity from government authorities on whether such a controversial proposal would be entertained.
