Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has sharply criticized former Sokoto State Governor Aminu Tambuwal over his recent defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to join the emerging opposition coalition ahead of the 2027 elections.
Wike, speaking during a media briefing in Abuja, questioned Tambuwal’s political legacy and credibility.
“Tambuwal, you were the Speaker for four years; what did you do to prevent Nigerians from being angry? You were the governor of Sokoto State for eight years; the people of Sokoto were happy, yet they refused to elect the person you endorsed,” Wike stated.
The FCT minister, known for his outspoken stance, accused Tambuwal of lacking consistency and failing to deliver when he had the opportunity to serve at both the legislative and executive levels.
This development comes amid rising political realignments as opposition figures seek to form a strong coalition to challenge the ruling party in the upcoming 2027 general elections.
Tambuwal, a former Speaker of the House of Representatives and two-term governor, recently joined forces with other former PDP members and third-force advocates, sparking debates within the party over loyalty and ideology.
The rift between Wike and Tambuwal is not new. Their rivalry dates back to the PDP presidential primary in 2022, when Tambuwal dramatically stepped down for Atiku Abubakar — a move Wike publicly condemned.
As 2027 approaches, this renewed clash signals further internal tensions that may shape the future of opposition politics in Nigeria.
