Security expert, Saliu Dantata, has revealed how notorious bandit leader Bello Turji’s fighters turned their weapons against those who contracted them to guard illegal mining sites.
He made the disclosure during an interview on Arise News while analyzing the connection between criminality and illegal mining in northern Nigeria.
According to Dantata, Turji’s boys were initially engaged by mining operators to provide protection for their activities. However, once the fighters discovered the enormous profits derived from the illicit trade, they abandoned their original arrangement and redirected their weapons toward their employers.
“Bello Turji boys were earlier contracted to come and guard the illegal mining sites. When they got to know the proceeds that accompanies it, they now changed by using the same arms they bought for them against the people that contracted them,” Dantata explained.
He warned that empowering criminal groups with arms and access to illicit revenue streams was a dangerous strategy, one that ultimately strengthens the same actors fueling insecurity across the region.
Illegal mining, particularly in Zamfara and neighboring states has long been linked to banditry and violence. Analysts say the trade provides both financial lifelines and operational capacity for armed groups, making them more difficult to dislodge.
Dantata stressed that a sustainable solution requires decisive state intervention to regulate mining activities, cut off funding for non-state actors, and dismantle the networks that support bandit leaders. He further urged the government to prioritize intelligence-driven security operations and restore control over mineral-rich territories.
The revelation highlights once again the intricate ties between resource exploitation and insecurity, underscoring the urgent need for coordinated action against both illegal mining and armed banditry.
