United Nations Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator for Nigeria, Mr Matthias Schmale has disclosed under development in the northwest has become a major concern due to insecurity and a large number of out-of-school children ravaging the region.
Speaking, Matthias made this affirmative while responding to questions from selected journalists in Maiduguri on Wednesday expressing concerns over acute malnutrition and promising to scale up support to the northwest states.
He pointed out that without sound education and health care services there would not be any meaningful development.
“I think security remains a major concern and not just Borno we still have a part of the country in the three states that are inaccessible for us, which means people who need aid don’t get it. Inaccessible areas as a result of security are a major challenge.
“Indeed, northwest is of major concern insecurity in the key issues there, I visited there a couple of times.
“In the northwest, we are trying to scale up support for the government for development works and to address many issues there I mentioned insecurity, acute malnutrition of children and we have a crisis in this country, of 20 million out of school children and many of them are in the northwest.
“There will no development unless people have quality education and health services that are the focus of the United Nations in the northwest.
“So in the north-west our focus there is the development but in the Northeast, we still have serious humanitarian crises,” he pointed out.
Matthias also stressed that UN agencies have been working closely with the Borno state government to support the closure of displaced camps and returnees.
