Usman Alhassan Belel, an astute, patriotic and unswerving professional Police Officer, was born on 6th October 1962 in Belel in Adamawa State. He is the eldest male child of the third District Head of Belel, Late Alhaji Usman Kulya Umar. Young Alhassan started pursuit of western education when he was enrolled into Mubi 1 Primary School under the then Mubi Native Authority where he obtained his first School Leaving Certificate in 1974 and immediately got admitted into Comprehensive Secondary School, Mubi in the same year.

Upon successful completion of his Secondary education in 1979, he proceeded to the College of Preliminary Studies in Yola, where he obtained his IJMB Certificate. The educationally ambitious Alhassan gained admission into the prestigious Bayero University Kano to study Sociology. Upon completion, the University Senate awarded him a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc) Degree in Sociology in 1985. After his National Youth Service, Alhassan got employed into the Nigeria Police Force on 15th March, 1988 as Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) and had his Police training at the Nigeria Police Academy.

AIG Belel climbed through the ladder to become Commissioner of Police (CP) in June 2018. As Commissioner of Police, he served as in the Special Protection Unit (SPU). Between September 2018 and September 2019, he served as Commissioner of Police in the Zamfara and Rivers States Commands respectively. While in Rivers State, he successfully conducted the 2019 National Elections, keeping the state free from the much anticipated electoral violence.

Between July 2020 and July 2021, he served as Commissioner of Police, Research and Development, in the Department of Research and Planning at the Force Headquarters Abuja. He was elevated to the enviable rank of Assistant Inspector-General of Police on 3rd February, 2021. He is currently the AIG In-Charge of the Force Criminal Investigation Department, Annex, Alagbon Close, Ikoyi, Lagos.

AIG Belel’s experience transcends the Nigerian shore. When he was a young officer of the rank Deputy Superintendent of Police, (DSP), he served as Deputy Defence Adviser, Civilian Police, at the Nigerian Permanent Mission to The United Nations, in New York for five years.

AIG Belel is a result-oriented and service-driven officer with 34 years 0f experience in Police Administration with a strong passion and desire to accomplish tasks.

He is dedicated, disciplined, dateline-oriented and performance-driven. AIG Belel is a member of Belel Ruling Family and a member of the International Association of Chiefs of Police. He is a traditional tittle holder, a responsible, dedicated family man, father and grandfather.
