In addition to killing him, the gunmen set fire to his country home and destroyed his property, including a motorcycle.

According to a source, the suspects struck in the early hours of Friday and fired for more than two hours.

It was gathered that the gunmen, who were on rampage, also visited the houses of other politicians in the area but met their absences.

“They have killed Christopher Elehu, popularly known as Wasco,” a source who did not want to be identified said. He was the Labour Party candidate in Onuimo Local Government Area until his death. They broke into his house after everyone had gone to bed and shot for over two hours.

“They killed the man and burnt his house. They also destroyed his property. His corpse was laying on the floor with matchet cuts when villagers gathered in the morning.”

The politician was assassinated just ten days after the LP candidate in a sister LGA, Okigwe, Chukwunonye Irouno, died unexpectedly.

Irouno, who was scheduled to speak at LP’s presidential campaign rally in the state, bowed out the night before. He was rushed to Owerri’s Federal Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

The state police had yet to issue a statement regarding the murder incident.
