The attack took place on Friday night in Lokoja, the state capital.

The gunmen were said to have also barricaded the adjoining roads to the headquarters and shot at motorists on sight.

But a team of security forces from police, army and the DSS later engaged the gunmen in a gun battle.

The commissioner of police in the state, Emmanuel Ojukwu, said a policeman died during the gun battle.

The police boss could, however, not confirm the identity of the attackers but he stated that the matter was under investigation.

“I cannot confirm whether they are Boko Haram members or not. All I know is that they are criminal elements and the law will take its course.

“We are investigating to know the circumstances that led to that attack, their motive and others,” he said.

He said despite the incident, the police would always be on the alert to protect the public in collaboration with other security agents and called for the cooperation of members of the public.

“Criminals live in our midst. Don’t hide them, criminals don’t respect persons. If you are not a victim today you may be a victim tomorrow if you don’t report criminal elements in your midst,” Ojukwu said.
