The Nigerian economy is under threat of a total shutdown as the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) announced plans for a nationwide strike.

The decision was made during a meeting of the NLC’s National Executive Council (NEC) held in Abuja on Friday, June 2, 2023.

According to the NLC, the nationwide strike will commence next Wednesday, June 7, 2023.

The NEC, which consists of Presidents, General Secretaries, Treasurers of all affiliate unions under the NLC, State Chairpersons and Secretaries of the NLC State Councils, the Chairperson of the NLC Youth Committee, and members of the National Administrative Council (NAC), deliberated on the fuel subsidy removal and the resulting fuel shortages plaguing the country.

This comes after the meeting between the Nigerian government and the organised labour hit a deadlock as no consensus was reached.
