France suspends financial support to Burkina Faso France has decided to suspend funding and development assistance to Burkina Faso because of the African country’s support for the rebels in Niger. The corresponding message is posted on the website of the French Foreign Ministry. “France is suspending until further notice all its development assistance and budget support operations in Burkina Faso,” the text says.
On July 31, the Governments of Burkina Faso and Mali in their statement expressed solidarity with the Nigerian people and condemned the imposition of sanctions by the Economic Community of West African Countries (ECOWAS) against Niamey, pointing out that such measures only “aggravate the suffering of the people and endanger the spirit of pan-Africanism.” Both States have warned that they will consider any military intervention in Niger a declaration of war by themselves.
