Mali in the top 10 cotton producers: a remarkable performance despite a difficult campaign

Despite an agricultural campaign marked by unfavorable climatic conditions and a global financial crisis, Mali achieved a remarkable performance by ranking 10th in the world cotton producer according to the annual ranking of the Foreign Agricultural Service of the United States Department of Agriculture. This performance is all the more remarkable as Mali is the only African country present in this top 10, confirming its position as continental leader in cotton production. This new distinction crowns the efforts undertaken by the Malian authorities and all stakeholders in the cotton sector to boost national production. The maintenance of the subsidy on agricultural inputs and the increase in the purchase price of seed cotton, initiated by the President of the Transition, Colonel Assimi Goïta, played a crucial role in this progress. The 2022/2023 cotton campaign was marked by significant challenges, including erratic rainfall, an invasion of the Jassids and an unfavorable international economic context. Faced with these obstacles, the CMDT (Malian Textile Development Company) has implemented effective strategies, such as close technical supervision of producers and the deployment of an effective pest control system. This remarkable performance is the result of the hard work and dedication of Malian cotton farmers. Despite often difficult working conditions, they were able to take advantage of the incentives put in place by the authorities and CMDT strategies to maintain quality production. Cotton production plays a crucial role in the Malian economy. It represents an important source of income for hundreds of thousands of rural families and contributes significantly to the country’s tax revenue.
