The attackers arrived at the Customs house in a Volkswagen Golf and a Land Rover around 10 p.m. on a Saturday and opened fire. During the attack, Usman Gombe was shot and killed as he attempted to climb over a fence to escape.

Additionally, the insurgents set fire to the customs patrol van, a generator, and part of the customs house building.

This incident marked the second time that Boko Haram insurgents had targeted customs officers, with a previous attack resulting in the abduction and subsequent killing of officers Babalola and his junior officer.
