The Aluminum Smelter Company of Nigeria (Alscon) plant in Ikot Abasi, Akwa Ibom State of Nigeria was one of the projects that were supposed to turn Nigeria into an industrial giant in the World. It was conceived by the Federal Military Government headed by General Yakubu Gowon in the early 1970s. However, the ALSCON Project was successfully implemented during the administration
of General Sani Abacha, Head of State and Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria(1993-1998).
The plant was designed to produce 193 000 tons of aluminum annually at optimal capacity. At full capacity, the plant can generate $400 million annually. In 2004, the National Council of Privatisation chaired by Vice President Atiku Abubakar sold the plant to a Russian company known as UC Rusal for a lowly $250 million. Recently the Russian Company, UC RUSAL operating the Aluminium Smelter Company of Nigeria was reported to have fled the multi-billion dollar plant after stripping the assets of the company in a manner smacking of fraud and economic sabotage. Today, ALUSCON will have employed thousands of young people from the South-South and Nigeria in general. The blame should squarely be on the shoulders of Atiku Abubakar.
